(b) A 3-phase synchronous motor is connected in parallel with a load of 800KW

at 0.8 p.f. lagging. The synchronous motor has a total load of 150 KW and its

excitation is so adjusted that the over all power factor becomes 0.93 lagging.

Calculate the KVA input to the motor and its power factor. Neglect motor

7. (a) Explain the method of constructing a load duration curve, and load curve.

(b) A residential consumer has a connected load of 10 lamps each of 100W at his

premises. His demand is as follows: from mid night to 5AM, 100W; from 5AM

to 6PM, no load; from 6 PM to 7PM, 800W; from 7PM to 9PM, 900W; from

9 PM to mid night, 400W.

i. Plot the load curve

ii. find the energy consumption during 24 hours and

iii. calculate the demand factor, average load, maximum demand and load

8. (a) What is the difference between flat rate tariff and block rate tariff.

(b) Obtain a two part tariff for the consumers of a supply undertaking which

8. (a) Describe some of the important types of tariff commonly used.

(b) A power station has an installed capacity of 20,00 kW. The cost of the station

load at 100% load factor, the variable costs of the station per year are 1.5

times the fixed costs. Assume that there is no reserve capacity of the plant

and that the variable costs are proportional to energy production. Find the

between 3 KV and 3.5 KV about 3.3 KV. Determine the minimum turn ratio

7. (a) Discuss the role of load factor on the cost of electrical energy.

(b) From a load duration curve, the following data are available: the maximum

demand on the system is 25 MW. The load supplied by two units is 15 MW

and 12.5 MW. Unit no.1 acts as a base load unit and No.2 as a peak load

unit. The base load unit works for 100% of the time and peak load unit for

only 40% of time the energy generated by unit No.1 is 1

×107 units. Determine the load factor, plant capacity factor and

plant use factor of each unit and load factor of the total plant. [6+10]

8. (a) Discuss the different classifications of costs of electrical energy.

(b) A power station has an installed capacity of 50MW and it costs Rs. 1000 Per

KW. The annual fixed cost is 15% of the capital cost and at 100% load factor,

the variable cost per year is 1.3 times the fixed cost. Assuming that there is

no reserve capacity, determine the cost of generation per KWh at load factor
